| The formation of
Spendthrift Sai stretches back to the early turn of the century. In late
2000 Chris Koterba was the lead singer and guitar player for a local Blues/Rock
band called BlueFire. Chris began privately writing acoustic songs in
a themed collection entitled Storyline. It was also at this time that
a young bass player named Aaron "Boss" Andries purchased a Fender
Stratocaster on impulse with the thought of trying something new. A mutual
friend by the name of Landon Mandt was living with Chris at the time and
suggested Aaron visits the group during one of their weekly rehearsals.
It didn't take long for Chris and Aaron to become fast friends. Chris took Aaron under his wing as a sort of mentor. His approach to teaching guitar was and is very organic. Rather than a strict classical way of teaching, Chris simply shows students a few elements and then lets them find their own way, offering guidance along that path of learning. At the time Chris was playing a couple songs from the Storyline project. Aaron was completely blown away and within a month bought an acoustic guitar, but after a short period of time put it in the corner and returned to the electric. As a couple years rolled by Chris and Aaron remained friends, though they played guitar together less and less. Chris began to feel as though Aaron had hung up his instrument, perhaps for good. During that time BlueFire broke up, losing their bass player Scott Pagac. Chris formed a new band named No Turning Back with a more heavy rock direction with long time friend Noah Armstrong on bass and Erik Deutscher on drums once again. Around late 2003 Aaron stopped out to Rainbird Studios to hear them rehearse. During this session Chris invited Aaron to play his new Gibson axe. To both Chris and Erik's surprise Aaron had progressed significantly since last they heard him play. Erik and Noah invited Aaron to jam with them once a week while Chris was working second shift. Eventually Noah left No Turning Back and thru auditions of bass players the band ended up selecting Scott Pagac to return. Playing into late 2004 in the new lineup the group played many shows, including opening for Collective Soul at the Rave. Late 2004 Erik Deutscher moved to Hollywood to pursue his interests in the film industry. The band went on hiatus. Shortly after Chris began working on his Storyline side project. During this time Aaron spent months exclusively playing acoustic guitar. Aaron also wrote his first legitimate and complete song entitled Everything's Not OK. The two joined forces and began playing together with the idea of Aaron playing some backup guitar for Chris to perform his storyline work in a coffee house setting. As the two played it became clear that new music was being written and the sound was starting to gel. The group experimented with different instrument lineups, from acoustic to electric to bass guitars. From that first night it became clear that this simple side project would become something more substantial. The group gained the name Spendthrift Sai after Chris read the term on an archaic word of the day calendar. The Shakespearian term describes a deep self-pitying sigh. As much of their early material was more melancholy in content, this title seemed appropriate. The spelling of sai was adopted over sigh for artistic reasons. In August of 2005 the duo recorded their debut demo entitled An Outside Life. They accomplished this feat without any outside help and finished the recording, mixing, and mastering of the seven song demo of all original music in less than 12 hours. To this time the band has never charged a dollar for a single copy of the disc. Its sole purpose was and is to distribute their music to as wide an audience as possible. October of 2005 the duo performed their first live show at The Steaming Cup coffee shop in downtown Waukesha, WI. The house was packed, with friends, family and fans alike. Multiple shows have followed as well as future bookings. In January of 2006 the group added Charles Marzofka as their Sound Engineer/Roadie. Spendthrift Sai are currently writing new music at an astounding pace in lieu of their first full-length album. Starting in early April 2006 the group will begin the recording process of the as of yet untitled album. They typically rehearse
twice a week, with their Sunday session being open to the public. If
you have a desire to hear them play or an interest to even possibly
jam please contact either Chris or Aaron. |
